Senator James Lankford from Oklahoma has expressed his support for the Social Security Fairness Act, which aims to address an issue affecting public servants' access to Social Security benefits. The act, which has successfully passed through the Senate, seeks to remove a provision that prevents public servants with secondary jobs from receiving these benefits.
"For decades teachers, law enforcement officers, firefighters and other public servants have been cut out of Social Security if they had a second job. Today, I supported the Social Security Fairness Act, which will ensure those who have paid into Social Security receive the benefits they’ve earned," Lankford stated.
While acknowledging the bill as a step forward in resolving this specific issue, Lankford noted that it does not tackle the broader challenge of ensuring long-term solvency for Social Security. He emphasized the need for continued efforts to secure its future. "While the bill solved one problem, it failed to address the long-term solvency of Social Security to uphold the promise for everyone. There is much more work to be done to protect Social Security in the days ahead," he added.
