Congressman Josh Brecheen has voiced strong opposition to the Southeast Oklahoma Power Corporation’s (SEOPC) proposed hydroelectric power plant on the Kiamichi River in LeFlore and Pushmataha Counties. SEOPC is reportedly linked to an individual associated with the Chinese Communist Party, raising concerns about foreign influence and land acquisition.

The project would necessitate the eminent domain of 35,000 acres of Oklahoma land, affecting numerous homes, farms, and ranches that have been owned by local families for generations. Additionally, all power generated by the plant would be sold in Texas rather than benefiting Oklahoma residents.

“Our office will do everything in our power to prevent this harmful project from moving forward,” stated Congressman Brecheen. “Any person or company involved with the Chinese Communist Party, which is an enemy of the United States, has no business operating in Oklahoma.”

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) must approve SEOPC's plans before construction can commence. To date, FERC has denied SEOPC’s applications, citing a lack of due diligence regarding eminent domain requirements in their most recent decision in March 2024. Despite these setbacks, SEOPC submitted another application for approval on May 7th.
