Senator James Lankford has issued a statement on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, which occurred on April 19, 1995. In his remarks, Lankford commemorated the lives lost and paid tribute to those who survived and responded to the catastrophe at the Alfred P. Murrah Building.
“On this 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, Cindy and I remember the 168 lives lost, including 19 children, and honor survivors and the courageous community who turned tragedy into stories of resilience and hope,” Lankford stated. He praised the first responders, volunteers, and the broader Oklahoma community for showing what he called “The Oklahoma Standard.” Lankford referenced the Survivor Tree, which symbolizes strength and resilience, serving as a reminder that recovery and rebuilding are possible after such devastating loss.
Leading up to this commemoration, Lankford addressed the Senate floor, where he delivered remarks related to the anniversary. In addition, he and Congresswoman Bice recently conducted a ceremony on the U.S. Capitol grounds to plant a Commemorative Survivor Tree sapling, which derives from the original tree that survived the bombing. This act symbolizes remembrance of the victims, survivors, and heroes of that tragic day.
Lankford, along with Senator Mullin, also introduced a resolution to mark this significant anniversary. The resolution passed the Senate without opposition. Tomorrow, Lankford is scheduled to speak at the First United Methodist Church of Oklahoma City, where he will participate in a remembrance event with local leaders and community members.
