On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, engaged in a discussion with community leaders from Lawton-Fort Sill about national defense issues, highlighting concerns related to defense budget cuts. The senator expressed support for Lawton's role in the nation's defense industrial base and addressed community advancement queries.
Senator Mullin emphasized the importance of the Fires Innovation Science and Technology Accelerator (FISTA) in maintaining Lawton-Fort Sill’s reputation as a leading national defense hub. "What you guys are doing with FISTA is remarkable. It shows partnership, a private-public partnership," said Sen. Mullin. He praised Lawton for setting an example in understanding the potential of such partnerships.
Austin Rabon, Chairman of the Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce, expressed gratitude for the delegation's efforts, stating, "The Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce is grateful for the work our Oklahoma delegation is doing in Washington, D.C. and appreciates each of them taking the time to meet with the Lawton community leaders to update us on the future of our country under the current administration."
In his remarks, Senator Mullin elaborated on the administration's defense reform goals. "The President came in very strong on this, saying that he wants to make reforms. He doesn’t want to weaken our military, he wants to strengthen it." He discussed opportunities for increased efficiency in defense spending and the need to reevaluate outdated programs and technologies.
He also noted the Department of Defense's positive view of Oklahoma's efforts, recounting, “General Brown… was very proud of what we’re doing in Oklahoma. I will tell you, that’s continued throughout the Department of Defense." Senator Mullin sees this as a significant point of pride and an opportunity for others to follow.
Concluding, he remarked on the potential for lasting change, stating, "I think we have a true, once in a generation, opportunity to make real changes for the generations that come behind us."
