"Project Switch Off," initiated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Oklahoma, marks its first anniversary with significant achievements in combating illegal machinegun conversion devices (MCDs). The initiative was launched on November 29, 2023, as part of efforts to address violent crime linked to these devices.

U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester highlighted the urgency of tackling MCD proliferation, stating: "The clear and immediate danger of machinegun conversion devices is real, and their proliferation is ever-increasing." He emphasized the legal prohibitions against manufacturing, selling, transporting, or possessing MCDs under federal law.

Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey C. Boshek II from the ATF Dallas Field Division expressed commitment to eradicating these devices: “Together, with the United States Attorney’s Office and all our law enforcement partners, we will continue to work tirelessly to eradicate these devices from our communities."

"Project Switch Off" focuses on educating the public about MCD dangers and training law enforcement in identifying them. The project has seen substantial results within its first year: 44 defendants charged with federal offenses; 29 guilty pleas or convictions; 18 sentences averaging over 80 months; and seizures including 185 MCDs and 298 firearms.

Recent cases under this initiative include Sheldon Lemont Battles' sentencing to 33 months for unlawful possession of a machinegun following a high-speed chase incident in Oklahoma City. Charles Lamar Scott received a 25-year sentence for robbery and firearm-related charges after an armed robbery at a CVS Pharmacy.

Other notable cases involve Ronald Deshell Steele Jr., Jaylen Terrell Benford, Emanuel Lopez, Anthony Lawrence Grizzard, Brandon Dominique Taylor facing various charges related to MCDs and other criminal activities.

An indictment against Bruce Gordon includes multiple counts related to unlawful transfer of machineguns and methamphetamine distribution.

For further information on MCDs, an ATF fact sheet is available online.
