U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) have introduced the Unlocking Domestic LNG Potential Act, a bill aimed at depoliticizing the export of American liquefied natural gas (LNG). The legislation seeks to eliminate the requirement for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to authorize LNG exports and instead give sole authority over the approval process to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
This move comes in response to President Biden's recent decision to pause approvals of pending applications for LNG exports, a decision that has been criticized by Senator Mullin and Senator Scott. They argue that the Biden administration's decision is politically motivated and compromises America's energy security.
Senator Mullin emphasizes the importance of American LNG in heating homes and stabilizing the economy. He also points out that American LNG is crucial for our allies, as it helps them reduce their reliance on Russian natural gas. Senator Mullin states, "Americans rely on LNG to heat our homes and stabilize the economy, and our allies rely on American LNG to replace Russian natural gas."
Senator Scott echoes this sentiment and highlights the potential environmental benefits of exporting U.S. natural gas. He states, "Exporting U.S. natural gas would actually lower global emissions." He also criticizes President Biden for bowing to the far-left and increasing reliance on foreign adversaries like Russia. Senator Scott adds, "Instead, I’m fighting to unleash America’s abundant natural resources, bolster our energy independence, and safeguard our national security."
The Unlocking Domestic LNG Potential Act has gained support from a number of senators, including Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), and many others. This bipartisan support reflects the shared goal of bolstering American energy independence and dominance.
It is worth noting that similar legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives earlier this Congress by former Representative Bill Johnson (R-Ohio). The bill was included in both the Low Energy Costs Act and the Limit, Save, Grow Act, both of which passed the House of Representatives but have since stalled in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
The introduction of the Unlocking Domestic LNG Potential Act demonstrates the ongoing effort to prioritize American energy independence and reduce reliance on foreign adversaries. By empowering the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission with sole authority over the approval process, this bill aims to streamline and expedite the export of American liquefied natural gas. As the debate around energy policy continues, it is clear that senators like Mullin and Scott are committed to promoting the interests of the American people and safeguarding the nation's energy security.
