The Mid-America Christian women's soccer team snapped a four-match losing streak at the Dill Soccer Field on Tuesday night as the Evangels battled Wayland Baptist to a 0-0 draw in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener.
MATCH SUMMARY
- Mid-America Christian's best chance at scoring the go-ahead goal came in the 21st minute when Daniela Paez ran down a cross from the right side of the 18-yard box toward the left before re-directing a pass toward Jasmine Morales in the middle of the box. However, Morales' volley shot from 16 yards out bounced off the crossbar.
- Wayland Baptist put up the best scoring opportunity of the half in the 27th minute when Bruna Moureira rifled a 23-yard shot toward the upper right portion of the goal, but MACU goalkeeper Makayla Farquharson got a piece of it with her left hand to direct the shot off the crossbar.
- MACU's last chance to take a lead going into half came off the head of Kadin Stinson from an Annika Gerdau corner kick with 2:04 remaining, but it was cleared away by the Pioneers to keep it scoreless heading into the half.
- With just under 15 minutes left, Mid-America Christian put together an offensive barrage as Annika Gerdau's initial shot from 16 yards out on the left side toward the right side of goal was saved by Kanade Morita before Mia Willyerd's rebound shot was blocked by a sliding defender.
- Just 13 seconds after Willyerd's shot, Angel Toledo had a great look from dead center at 20 yards toward the right post, but WBU's Morita made another stellar diving save to force a MACU corner.
- Mid-America Christian had two more on-target chances in the 86th minute when Annika Gerdau put a beautiful cross from the right sideline for Morales in the middle of the box, but her header was saved once again by Morita diving toward the right side. With just under two minutes to go, Gerdau tried a 35-yard free kick from the right sideline, lofting it toward the top left corner, but Morita snagged the attempt to seal the 0-0 final.
- Despite coming up empty, the Mid-America Christian attack pressured the Wayland Baptist defense, outshooting the Pioneers by a 24-9 margin. However, shots on-goal came at a premium in the match as the Evangels could only muster five on-target attempts, all of which came in the second half while WBU was held to only two on-goal shots, both coming in the opening half.
- Annika Gerdau led the MACU offensive efforts with five shot attempts with two landing on-goal while Jasie Eischen forced four shots with one lading on-target.
- MACU goalkeeper Makayla Farquharson recorded her first career shutout with the Evangels, finishing the match with a pair of saves.
- The all-time series between Mid-America Christian and Wayland Baptist remained at a gridlock as the draw brought the series to a 7-7-4 mark.
- Mid-America Christian will be back at home on Saturday as the Evangels will host Central Christian. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at the Dill Soccer Field.
