Sen. James Lankford, U.S. Senator representing Oklahoma, posted a series of statements on social media in early November 2025 regarding the ongoing federal government shutdown and his legislative priorities.

On November 3, Lankford commented on the status of negotiations to reopen the government, stating, “What’s Moving on Monday? Nothing. There have been conversations about opening the government, but nothing is concrete yet. I will continue working for Oklahomans as we navigate this process together.”

The following day, he expressed support for his proposed legislation aimed at preventing future shutdowns: “If I could fix one thing in Washington, it would be passing my Prevent Government Shutdowns Act so we never find ourselves in this position again.” The Prevent Government Shutdowns Act has been introduced in previous sessions of Congress with the goal of ensuring that critical federal services remain operational during funding disputes by requiring lawmakers to remain in session until appropriations are resolved.

By November 5, Lankford urged action from Senate Democrats to resolve the impasse: “This has gone on for too long. My Democrat colleagues need to come to the table and open the government. Now.”

Government shutdowns have occurred periodically when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills or continuing resolutions necessary to fund federal agencies and programs. Such events disrupt public services and often lead to political standoffs between parties over budgetary issues.
