Senator James Lankford, U.S. Senator for Oklahoma, highlighted on August 4, 2025, a series of funding initiatives and policy provisions secured for his state through the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (MILCON-VA) appropriations bill.
In one post, Lankford announced funding for military infrastructure: “$55 million for the Ammunition Demolition Shop at McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, so munitions can be safely decommissioned.” This investment targets the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, a key facility in Oklahoma responsible for producing and decommissioning munitions.
Lankford also described broader benefits for the state in another tweet: “We secured MAJOR wins for Oklahoma in one of the first appropriations bills passed since 2023 – the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (MILCON-VA) bill. Never heard of it? Here’s why it’s important and what it means for Oklahoma The MILCON-VA bill funds construction” The senator emphasized that this was among the first appropriations bills passed since 2023, highlighting its significance.
Addressing veterans’ healthcare access, Lankford wrote: “Encourages the VA to identify and remove barriers to working with private healthcare providers, as well as private-sector professionals, on everything from infrastructure improvements to addressing workforce shortages, to improving access to specialized care and providing a more”
The McAlester Army Ammunition Plant is a major employer in southeastern Oklahoma and serves as a primary site for producing, storing, and demilitarizing conventional munitions. Investments like those described by Lankford aim to enhance safety protocols around decommissioning aging or obsolete ammunition stockpiles.
The MILCON-VA appropriations bill is responsible each year for funding military construction projects and programs administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It typically includes provisions related to health care services for veterans and upgrades to military facilities. In recent years, there has been bipartisan support in Congress to increase cooperation between the VA and private-sector health providers to improve access to specialized medical care for veterans.
