Oklahoma City University knocked off Baker (Kan.) 45-9 on Saturday at the Mabee Fieldhouse in the Avila Eagle Duals.
Cooper Mahaffey and Trinit Zweifel pulled off falls to key the Stars past Baker, ranked 16th in NAIA men’s wrestling. Oklahoma City improved to 6-2 with a 48-0 victory over Waldorf (Iowa).
OCU finished the day 2-2 with losses to sixth-ranked Ottawa (Kan.) 33-10 and 11th-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) 34-9.
The Stars defeated a ranked opponent in a dual for the first time since their 27-22 win over No. 12 Hastings (Neb.) on Dec. 18, 2021 in the Eagle Duals. Mahaffey, a junior finance major from Yukon, Okla., pinned Baker’s Ben Stubblefield in 5:23 at 133 pounds. Mahaffey, ranked 18th among the NAIA, moved to 7-4 with his third pin this season.
Zweifel, a freshman from Enid, Okla., studying philosophy, political science and economics, took the fall against Logan Farrell in 2:45 in the 141-pound contest. Zweifel went to 9-4 with his fifth pin of 2022-23.
Mannix Faworski put the Stars up 39-0 with his 9-3 win against Eli Messick at 174 pounds. OCU won three of the five matches contested against Baker.
Against Waldorf, OCU posted its 11th shutout in program history. Jack Kitchingham came up with the Stars’ quickest fall of the day, pinning Jackson Rickter in 25 seconds at 197.
Faworski, a freshman business administration major from Winnebago, Ill., overwhelmed Roemelo Hudson 17-1 in the 174-pound match. Conner Columbus rolled to an 11-2 win over Randry Mugisha at 184.
OCU’s Keegan Luton racked up four victories on the day at 149 pounds. Luton, a sophomore psychology major from Mustang, Okla., prevailed over Hunter Wagner from Ottawa 18-7 in a clash of individuals ranked among the top 20 in the NAIA. Luton owns the No. 5 spot in the 149-pound ratings, while Wagner is No. 16. Luton upped his season record to 9-2 with two falls.
Oklahoma City wrestles next in the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 6-7 in Louisville, Ky.
