Oklahoma City University knocked off Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 72-62 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Avery Jackson boosted Oklahoma City with 23 points. The Stars moved to 6-6, 4-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference men’s basketball.
OCU outscored Southwestern Assemblies of God 38-25 in the second period. The Stars snatched up the lead with a 9-2 run where Kori Guest buried a 3-pointer, while Dravon Clayborn nailed a couple of jumpers. Clayborn scored to put OCU up 49-42 with 14:41 remaining.
Clayborn added a trey and a jump shot as part of a 7-0 surge to move OCU’s lead to 65-54 with 4:04 remaining.
The Stars limited Southwestern Assemblies of God to a 28.1 percent field-goal percentage while upping their shooting clip to 43.8 percent from the field. OCU held an opponent below 35 percent from the field for the third time this season (33.3 percent).
Jackson, a freshman political science major from Frisco, Texas, notched his fourth 20-point scoring output of the season along with eight rebounds and three steals. He hit all six of his free-throw tries and 8-for-12 from the floor.
Clayborn and Kori Guest each turned in 19 points. Clayborn, a senior business administration major from Evanston, Ill., grabbed four rebounds and two steals, and Guest, a senior criminal justice major from Tulsa, Okla., hauled in eight rebounds while shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point range.
Oklahoma City meets North Texas Dallas at 3:45 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
