Oklahoma City University invites all members of the military, active and retired, to be honored for their service Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.On Saturday, all branches of military services will be recognized, and all servicewomen and men either in uniform or with a military ID will receive free admission to the Stars’ basketball games at Abe Lemons Arena. The women’s contest against Central Christian (Kan.) tips off 2 p.m., while the men’s game takes place approximately 3:45 p.m.For more information, contact OCU Athletics at (405) 208-5309.
“This is an extremely important day for our program, and a tradition that we plan to continue each year,” OCU women’s basketball coach Kris Seigenthaler said. “We currently have close ties with the United States Military as Marines Corps Capt. Zachary Shelton has instilled leadership tactics and trained our players during the preseason. This is a day to honor all branches and all those who have and continue to fight and sacrifice for us. It’s our honor to host our inaugural Military Night.”
A color guard will be on hand for the game, along with an on-court presentation of appreciation.
“Our student-athletes recognize the hard work and sacrifice that military members have made, and continue to make, for all of us,” said Mark Berokoff, OCU head men’s basketball coach. “We’re looking forward to this game and the chance to play in front such a distinguished group of women and men.”OCU owns nine national championships won in women’s basketball (1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017) and six in men’s basketball (1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007, 2008).
