Oklahoma City University gets past Central Christian

Oklahoma City University prevailed over Central Christian (Kan.) 25-16, 20-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-7 on Tuesday night at Dr. Jerry E. Alexander Arena. 

OCU closed out the match by scoring the final five points. The Stars improved to 11-11, 9-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball. 

In the last set, the Stars erased 3-0 and 4-2. Oklahoma City secured the victory as Ruby Kelley crushed a kill to put OCU up 13-7, then Catelyn Vargas hammered a kill to bring up match point. Vargas teamed with Gabrielle Fjeseth on the decisive block. 

OCU forced the fifth set by taking the fourth set. The Stars posted a 7-0 onslaught to move ahead 11-5. Rylee Steward sparked the run by nailing a kill, and Kelley pounded the kill to cap the surge. Oklahoma City went to 5-1 in five-set matches this year. 

Kelley, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., collected 17 kills, 14 digs and two blocks for her seventh double-double of the season. Steward, a junior from Edmond, Okla., notched 16 kills and six blocks. 

Vargas, a senior from Lubbock, Texas, supplied OCU with 11 kills, five blocks and three aces, while Cassidy DeShong, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, rang up 26 assists and five digs. 

OCU’s Kaitlyn Dunlap, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, Texas, piled up 16 digs and three aces, and Emma Vance, a junior from Norman, Okla., turned in 25 assists, seven digs and two aces. 

The Stars host Langston in a 7 p.m. match Thursday in Dig Pink Night at Abe Lemons Arena.
