Oklahoma City University Ashley from OCU reels in SAC wrestler of week

Avery Ashley of Oklahoma City University became Sooner Athletic Conference women’s wrestler of the week. 

The Stars swept the men’s and women’s honors in the first weekly conference wrestling awards for 2022-23.  

Ashley took the Carl Albert State Viking Open 116-pound title Sunday in Poteau, Okla. Ashley finished the tournament with three wins, two by technical fall and one by fall. Ashley pinned Raquel Ramos Soriano of the University of the Ozarks (Ark.) in 37 seconds for Ashley’s second fall of the season. Ashley won by technical fall against Wayland Baptist’s Mia Arcenaux 10-0 to win the crown.  

In a dual against Texas Wesleyan, Ashley upended Camille Fournier, the second-ranked wrestler at 123 pounds in the NAIA, 12-2 on Wednesday in Oklahoma City. Fournier finished fifth at 116 pounds to earn all-America acclaim in the 2021 NAIA Invitational. Ashley improved to 6-0 on the season.
