Markwayne Mullin, U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, posted a series of statements on September 9, 2025, regarding ongoing efforts to change Senate rules related to the confirmation process for presidential nominees.
In his first post, Mullin stated, “It’s never been about the noms– Senate Dems hate Trump and resent America for their huge failure in the last election. The historic obstruction ends now. We’re going to fix it so duly elected presidents of both parties can get their teams working for you without delay. (3/5)” (September 9, 2025).
In another post on the same day, he outlined steps being considered by Republican senators: “Then, @SenateGOP must vote to overrule the chair w/ simple majority (51 votes) to CHANGE the Senate rules. We’ll continue to keep you informed. In short: the ball is in motion to change the rules ASAP and move sub-cabinet Trump nominees more QUICKLY and in GROUPS. (2/5)” (September 9, 2025).
Mullin also referenced previous actions by Democrats in a third statement: “In 2023, Dems introduced another rules change proposal “to expedite the process for confirming certain presidential nominees and reduce the backlog waiting for approval.” We’re modifying their proposal, stopping this blockade, and restoring the Senate’s nomination process. (5/5)” (September 9, 2025).
Efforts to reform Senate procedures around nominations have been ongoing in recent years. In 2023, Democratic senators put forward proposals aimed at streamlining confirmations and reducing backlogs for presidential appointments.
