Senator Markwayne Mullin has raised concerns regarding the long-term stability of Medicaid in a series of posts on July 14, 2025. In his statements, Mullin addresses the expansion of Medicaid eligibility during the Obama administration and outlines Republican efforts to reform the program.
In a post dated July 14, 2025, Mullin stated that “Medicaid’s long-term stability is at risk. During the Obama admin, Dems expanded Medicaid eligibility to include able-bodied adults — adding 20 million able-bodied people to the program rolls between 2013 and 2021. 1/8”
On the same day, he commented on proposed changes to coverage criteria: “To protect & sustain Medicaid, the only people who will see a change in coverage are illegals, those already ineligible for the program, & able-bodied adults ages 19-64 with dependents over 14 yrs old who choose not to work, volunteer, or go to school for 20 hours per week. 6/8”
He further argued that reforms are necessary to prevent collapse and ensure protection for vulnerable populations: “Most Americans recognize that without commonsense reform, Medicaid would be at a higher risk of collapse. As promised, Republicans are getting the waste, fraud, and abuse out of Medicaid to protect the well-being of America’s most vulnerable. 7/8”
Medicaid is a joint federal and state program providing health coverage for low-income individuals and families in the United States.
