Markwayne Mullin, U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, published a series of posts on July 25, 2025, addressing the impact and legacy of tax policy changes initiated during President Donald Trump’s administration. In his statements, Mullin highlights the perceived benefits for working-class families and lower-income earners.

In one post dated July 25, 2025, Mullin stated: “In 2024, President Trump ran on lowering prices, restoring a record strong economy, and protecting historic tax breaks for working-class families. The OBBB just made the Trump Tax Cuts permanent– PREVENTING the average taxpayer from being hit with a 22 percent tax hike. 5/”

On the same day, he added: “FACT: During @POTUS’ first term, families making under $30K got the biggest tax cut of ANY income group. The bottom 20% of earners saw their federal tax rates fall to 40 year lows. In 2018 & 2019, wages increased 4.9%, while real median household income rose by $5K. 4/”

Mullin also provided historical context in another post from July 25: “Quick history: Back in 2017, the media and the establishment doubted Trump. Then, we passed the hugely successful Trump Tax Cuts & Jobs Act which primarily benefited low- and middle-income American families while increasing the share of taxes paid by the wealthiest taxpayers. 3/”

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), signed into law in December 2017 during President Trump’s first term, was a significant overhaul of U.S. tax policy that lowered individual income tax rates across several brackets and doubled the standard deduction for most filers. Analysis from nonpartisan sources found that while all income groups initially received some reduction in federal taxes due to TCJA provisions such as expanded child credits and lower rates for lower brackets, higher-income households received larger dollar-value cuts on average because they pay more in taxes overall.

The permanence of these tax cuts has been debated in Congress since many provisions were set to expire after several years unless renewed or extended by subsequent legislation.
