Markwayne Mullin, U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, commented on the ongoing government shutdown and actions by Senate Democrats in a series of posts on October 6, 2025.
In his first post of the day, Mullin criticized Senate Democrats for their approach to negotiations with President Trump. He wrote, “@SenateDems Reminder: by throwing a tantrum for their radical far-left base, Senate Dems handed President Trump sole discretion to deem essential and non-essential workers and deliver on his promise to shrink the size of government.” (October 6, 2025).
Later that evening, Mullin referenced the impact of the shutdown on taxpayers. He stated, “You’re paying for the Schumer Shutdown. Day 6: https://t.co/x0HXU88DJo” (October 6, 2025).
In another post published shortly after, Mullin discussed ongoing legislative activity related to ending the shutdown and advancing nominations. He posted, ” VOTING NOW: Senate Democrats have their 5th chance to end the Schumer Shutdown. Then, tonight we’ll vote to advance a batch of over 100+ Trump nominees. @SenateGOP will clear the nominee backlog this week.” (October 6, 2025).
The term “Schumer Shutdown” refers to previous instances where congressional impasses led to temporary halts in federal government operations due to lapses in appropriations. Such shutdowns can result in furloughs for federal employees and interruptions in public services until funding legislation is passed.
These comments come amid continued debates between Republican and Democratic senators regarding federal spending and executive authority during periods when Congress fails to pass necessary budget measures.
