Senators James Lankford and John Fetterman introduced a resolution on May 4 ahead of Public Service Recognition Week, which runs from May 3 to May 9, to honor employees of federal, state, and local governments as well as members of the uniformed services. The resolution commends public servants for their dedication and calls on people across the United States to observe the week with appropriate programs and activities.

The senators said the recognition is important because public servants play a vital role in strengthening the economy, protecting public safety, and supporting democratic self-governance. Lankford said, “Public Service Recognition Week gives our country an opportunity to pause and thank the many government workers across Oklahoma and the nation for their commitment to serving others. Civil servants support our military, provide essential care for veterans, keep our airports safe and running smoothly, along with many other important jobs that help our nation function daily. Today and every day we are grateful for the way they serve each and every one of us.”

Fetterman added his support by saying, “Public servants keep this country running in many different ways—all contributing significantly to the greatest country in the world. It’s more important than ever that we show up for them. I’m proud to join Senator Lankford in introducing this resolution for Public Service Recognition Week. No matter what level of government they serve at or what uniform they wear, I commend and am grateful for these men and women, their dedication, and their patriotism—not just this week, but always.”

Lankford serves as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Border Management, Federal Workforce and Regulatory Affairs where he leads efforts focused on making federal government operations more efficient while supporting its workforce. The resolution states that “public service is a noble calling involving a variety of challenging and rewarding professions” performed by highly skilled individuals.

According to the official website, Lankford ranked as the Senate’s top “Taxpayers Friend” by the National Taxpayers Union; he has advocated for protecting life, liberty, families; directed Falls Creek Youth Camp—the nation’s largest youth camp; represented Oklahoma in the U.S. Senate; authored an annual Federal Fumbles report suggesting solutions to federal challenges; maintained offices in Washington D.C., Oklahoma City, and Tulsa.

The senators’ joint effort aims not only at honoring current public servants but also encouraging ongoing recognition through programs during Public Service Recognition Week.
